DMV: Uh, never mind
Some California drivers are receiving delinquency notices from the DMV even though they renewed their vehicle registration on time.
The problem began in July, when DMV stopped mailing renewal notices until the bickering Legislature decided on vehicle license fee levels. The subsequent backlog is basically cleared up now, DMV says. But the agency is offering all vehicle owners a 30-day renewal deadline extension through the end of the year. So, says DMV, don’t pay the late fee unless you’re more than 30 days late.
Take your lumps
Reader Ling Suen saw this road sign: “Speed lumps, 15 mph.” Lumps, he asks? Is that a correct word? Yes, if you’re a traffic engineer. Lumps are members of the hump family. They’re the ones with sections cut out to match the axle length for firetrucks and buses, so they can go faster on emergency calls.
Speaking of road lumps, there have been a lot of skunk sightings in Sacramento neighborhoods at night lately. What to do if you hit one? Call animal control. In the city, that’s 311. If the animal is alive, they’ll try to save it. If it is dead, it’s a road hazard and needs to be removed.
